SCALE OF 1 TO 10 A quick way to discover where people are on a particular decision or issue is to use the scale of 1 to 10 (see the scales in the preplanning checklist at the end of this chapter). If the leader of a group such as a board wants to know where people stand on an issue, he or she can ask each one for a number between 1 and 10. A 1 says the person is strongly against the issue, and a 10 indicates that he or she is adamantly for it. A 5 or 6 means not sure. If all those in a group give a 10 to a particular issue, such as a change of worship style from traditional to contemporary or hiring a new staff person, then the leader can move forward without unnecessary discussion.
