As the blade approaches your thigh, change the angle by rotating your grip hand away from your body and pointing your thumb away.  Slide the paddle into position at or just behind your hip, the powerface now facing away from the canoe.  Press the powerface outward to carve the J, with canoe and blade less than 12 inches (30­1/2 cm) apart.  Lever off the gunwale during the J phase for more power.  Let the blade slice forward with no resistance from the water until it rises to the surface.  Feather the blade back to catch, powerface facing the sky.

If necessary, use four or even six people, distributed evenly around the canoe to make the load lighter.  Even easier, carry them to the water with your accessory gear.  Lift with your legs!  Again, only one person should move at a time to enhance stability. Follow the instructions on page 35 when entering a canoe or when changing positions to successfully keep your boat stable.  Grasping both gunwales, step into the canoe over the centerline.  Keep your weight low to lower your center of gravity.
