The rise of Gender Studies in the Russian Federation at the end of 1980s and the early 1990s has resulted in the creation of a curious situation in the social science community. At first glance, the situation seems to reflect the main tendencies in the development of research: the common difference between Gender Studies and Women’s Studies exists in Russian social science just as it does in Western social science. However, such impressions turn out to be rather superficial. In reality, the main research stream in the Russian version of Gender Studies is the ‘female’ one.
