Note: Notice that your plug-in list should include even more detailed information, such as a plug-in’s exact location, version number, name and file type, and so on. This is a great list to have, but the reason I wanted to show you first how to organize the actual files is because if Cubase can’t properly locate the driver file, chances are that it won’t appear in this list. Once the list is visible, simply uncheck the plug-ins that you don’t wish to use by clicking in the left column. 24 G o i n g Pr o w i t h C u b a s e 6 Note: A new feature of VST3 technology is one that automatically disables the plug-in when it is not in use.

I’m not a particular fan of this method because it tends to clutter the audio event display, but I could see how if you’re working with a lot of audio tracks, this feature could come in handy. Under the MIDI subcategory (still in the Event Display category), by selecting the Default Edit Action you can choose which MIDI editor to open and display when you double-click on a MIDI event. For the last 20 years, by default, the editor to open has been the Key Editor. But, if you choose, you can instead open the In-Place Editor, Drum Editor, List Editor, or Score Editor.

Also, just because you’re calling this a template, that doesn’t mean you can’t include audio tracks or MIDI tracks. Let’s say, for instance, you like a certain groove, and even though you might not use it in the final mix, you like to use it as a guide for your other tracks. You can save that groove with the template, whether it’s a MIDI or an audio track, and it will be there at startup when you open the template. Some people actually like to have a recorded click track to play with, as opposed to using the Cubase metronome.
