Rarely do any of us, frankly and without shame, dare to name our own struggle to ward off depression, despair, suicidal impulses, and addictions, exposing the reality of our lives . . I have attempted to acknowledge my paradoxical identity as an intellectual, as an “outsider-within” (Collins 1990). The outsider-within perspective is uniquely ascribed to Black Womanist scholars. That we are changed in the process of education is no mere accident. We teachers want to change our students. And we are certain that change is for the better. My students, seemingly, believed that education was treating all students equally rather than equitably, as well as keeping one’s politics out of the classroom.
