There was no rule to the effect that certain transactions must be made by chirograph. In this as in most conveyancing matters people were free to choose between various alternatives.

The drawing up of non-royal documents being a matter for uncontrolled free enterprise, left to clerks of varying degrees of literary competence and technical knowledge,9 it was only in the mid-thirteenth century that what one may call standard forms emerged for the documents necessary to carry out some of the transactions mentioned above, and even then there was room for much variation in the phrasing and arrangement of the necessary clauses. There was no regular and systematic changeover, throughout England, from one formulation to another, and most of the variant formulations which are encountered existed side by side over long periods.
