1. I N T R O D U C T I O N The first flow computation on a parallel computer was performed in the seventies. Researchers at NASA-Ames Research Center successfully used the 64 processor ILLIAC IV computer for direct numerical simulation of homogeneous turbulence in 1976, and in 1979, a large eddy simulation of turbulent channel flow was carried out. These calculations revealed, for the first time, the powerful utility of numerical simulations in fundamental turbulence research, which eventually led to the formation of the Center for Turbulence Research.
